First make sure the batteries are in working order in your remote control. If so, go inside your garage with the remote you had in your car, and with the garage closed, test the remote to see if the door opens. If not then your remote is most likely broken and you need to replace it. We will assume this since the button on the garage door wall opened the door.

When moving to a new house, the garage door opener was no where to be found. The receiver is a separate unit from the actual opener, both of the same brand.

Automatic Garage Opener Troubleshooting

The receiver is a Genie Cryptar II, model No. Also printed in the same area is the frequency: 290. There doesn't appear to be replacement remotes for this brand and model specifically. Modern universal remotes for garage doors stipulate the opener must be made after 1995 (This one is certainly older than that), and don't operate in the range needed anyway. Is there anyway I could tune or modify a transmitter to emit the proper frequency? Does anyone have any experience in replacing really old garage door remotes?. Before you spend money on an old remote and/or an updated receiver / remote combo think of your future use.I say this because most older garage door openers don't have safety sensors and are literally death traps. They had powerful motors and could easily crush a small child or pet - and severely injure an adult who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. You can pick up a new garage door opener complete with two remotes, safety sensors, a wireless keypad, and all the necessary hardware for around $150.

If you have children or pets or ever plan to have children or pets at the house, or even if you just want to ensure it is safe. This may be a good opportunity to update.I replaced both of the garage doors in my prior home because neither of them had safety sensors and although they would reverse if they hit something, the amount of force it took for them to reverse would easily harm a child (or maybe even an adult). The risk wasn't worth it for me, so I opted to buy a new unit which was belt drive (very, very quiet), had two brand new remotes, a wireless keypad for the outside, and even a battery backup in case the power was out. The interior controls included a time and temperature display and had a motion sensor on them to turn on the lights when I walked into the garage.

Total cost for each opener was $220 - well worth it considering all the improvements over the originals. Plus they were way faster in opening and I was always confident that I couldn't be locked out of the home due to the keypad and battery backup.
